SLO Brew is throwing a free music event, The Cayucos Pier Benefit Concert, to “save the pier” in Cayucos this Saturday, November 16, 2013. There will be a stage made on the pier and everyone can post up on the beach with their favorite beach towel. Grab a couple snacks from the concession booths (all proceeds go toward the $2 million dollar repair job) and invite your friends and family to this classic beach party. Event runs 11am to 4pm.
The Local Artists Performing at the Cayucos Pier Benefit Concert
1. Julian Temple Band: Julian grew up in Cayucos, then moved to New Zealand to study music at Otago on the South Island in the city of Dunedin. Julian returned years later with a few national tours under his belt. He currently lives in Cayucos with his family of five and performs at various venues on the Central Coast on a regular basis. He shreds at surfing and strumming his acoustic.

2. Proxima Prada: According to their website: “Próxima Parada, the amalgamation of five male genitalia united under one common goal, was erected in January of 2012, which the world would soon decide to call year 0.” The band’s name–Próxima Parada–translates in Spanish to ‘Next Stop’, and they’re from San Luis Obispo.
3. The Monroe: A band from Atascadero – their Facebook page: “The Monroe is an eclectic band, drawing influences from many genres of music. Combining Tones of Soul, Rock and Roll, Reggae/Ska, Gospel, and Folk.”
4. Joe Koenig: Joe moved here from Texas to go to school at Cal Poly years ago. His website says: “If you organize Joe’s songs in the right order, you’d know the story of his life. Reflective lyrics and minimalist, stripped-down music define his soulful mastery. Driven by the intensity and turbulence of life events, Joe’s music shares a story guaranteed to make you feel…Joe Koenig’s musical endeavors began in late 1999 when he and his college roommates formed the rock band TORSION. In 2000 they released their first EP and amassed a cult following in San Luis Obispo.” Now Joe tours Solo around the South West USA.

1. Matt Costa : “An almost pro skateboarder who turned to music after a nasty leg break, is a real DIY success story. His 1993 homemade demo found its way into the hands of No Doubt guitarist Tom Dumont, who brought Costa into his own home studio and recorded more demos, which he eventually combined into Costa’s first full-length CD, Songs We Sing. By 2005, Costa was opening for Jack Johnson, and now he records on Johnson’s Brushfire Records.” – From Glen Starky at New Times
2. Makana: His website “Described as “dazzling” by the New York Times, Makana is an internationally acclaimed guitarist, singer, and composer who is widely known for lending his musical talent for social change.”
3. Cayucas: Really? You used the name of our town for your band?? And you didn’t even ask the elders? Shame on you Cayuc-ass , but it’s okay. We’ll let it slide as long as you rip super hard for the concert and raise a bunch of cash to save our pier. All kidding aside, thanks for the homage and we understand, Cayucos is that cool.
From the Cayucas website “Cayucas: Pronounced “ky-yook-us”, is the monikered homage to a sleepy little seaside town in San Luis Obispo County, California. That town, Cayucos, has hardly changed in the last 50 years, a far cry from the gentrified tourist traps parading showily down the nearby coastline. In the early 1960s, the surfing craze hit. There was one bar around which local kids congregated back then, the site of helpless crushes and fights and games of pool, a place whose jukebox soundtracked innumerable teenage years as breezy summers rolled into mild winters and back around again.
